Most players claim bonuses without reading the terms. That’s costing them money. I’ve read thousands of bonus T&Cs. Here are the 7 red flags I always check first.
1. Wagering Requirement Over 40x
At 40x on a £100 bonus, you need to wager £4,000. At 96% RTP, expected loss: £160. You’re spending £160 to clear a £100 bonus. Walk away from anything over 40x.
2. Deposit + Bonus Wagering vs. Bonus Only

35x on bonus only = £100 × 35 = £3,500. Same 35x on deposit+bonus = (£100+£100) × 35 = £7,000. Same headline number, double the burden. Always confirm which applies.
3. Maximum Bet Restriction
Typically £5 per spin. Place one bet over this limit and your bonus and all winnings are voided immediately. Casino systems monitor every bet in real time.
4. Game Contribution Percentages
Slots usually contribute 100%. Table games often 10% or 0%. If blackjack contributes 10%, clearing £3,500 in wagering actually requires £35,000 of blackjack bets.
5. Maximum Withdrawal Cap on Bonus Winnings
A £50 max cashout cap. You win £1,000, can only withdraw £50. The rest disappears. Common on big-percentage bonuses. If the cap is low, the offer is worthless.
6. Short Expiry Period
24-72 hours to claim AND complete wagering. £4,000 wagering in 24 hours = £166/hour continuously. Impossible for most players. Designed to make you rush and bet recklessly.
7. Sticky (Non-Cashable) Bonus
The bonus is removed before withdrawal. Only winnings above the bonus amount are paid out. A £100 sticky bonus is phantom money you can never withdraw.
Marcus’s 3-Step Check
- Wagering requirement? (Over 35-40x, or deposit+bonus? Walk away.)
- Max bet restriction? (Can you comfortably stay under it?)
- Max withdrawal cap? (Is it reasonable relative to the bonus size?)
