Casino Game Strategies That Actually Work

Daniel Carter Published Apr 14, 2026 | Last updated: Jun 18, 2026 8 min read

Most casino losses come from three places: playing the wrong games, making the wrong decisions within those games, and mismanaging a bankroll. Strategy does not beat the house edge. It does shrink it, extend your sessions, and put the math as far in your favour as the game allows. This guide covers each game in order of how much skill actually matters.

The House Edge: What You Are Actually Playing Against

Every casino game has a built-in mathematical advantage. The house edge is the percentage of each bet the casino expects to keep over millions of rounds. A 2% house edge means the casino expects to keep 2p from every pound wagered over time. Individual sessions swing wildly around that number, but the edge is relentless over volume.

House edge by game (approximate, optimal play):

  • Blackjack (basic strategy, favourable rules): 0.4-0.5%
  • Baccarat (banker bet): 1.06%
  • European roulette: 2.7%
  • American roulette: 5.26%
  • Slots: 3-6% (varies by title)
  • Keno: 20-35%

The first strategic decision is choosing where on this list to play. Everything below that is optimising your play within the game you have chosen.

RTP and What It Actually Tells You

Return to Player is the inverse of house edge, expressed as a percentage. A slot with 96% RTP has a 4% house edge. RTP is calculated over millions of spins and says nothing about any individual session. A 96% RTP slot does not mean you get 96p back from every pound; it means the game trends toward that figure at scale.

What RTP is useful for: comparing slots before you play. A 97% RTP slot is meaningfully better than a 93% RTP slot over a long session. Check it in the game info panel before you start. Use our RTP calculator to see what different percentages mean in real money terms across a session length.

Bankroll Management

No strategy survives poor bankroll management. The rules are simple and the discipline is the hard part.

  • Session budget: Decide the maximum you will lose before you open a game. That is your entertainment budget for the session. Once it is gone, stop.
  • Bet sizing: Individual bets should be 1-2% of your session budget. A 50-unit session on a game with 2% house edge gives you meaningful run time without going bust in the first 10 hands.
  • Win limits: If you are up significantly, lock in a portion of it. Continuing to play until you give it all back defeats the purpose of winning.
  • Loss limits: Never chase. Increasing your bet size to recover losses raises your exposure at exactly the moment when nothing is going right. It ends sessions badly.

Use deposit and session limits in your casino account settings. They enforce the discipline mechanically so you do not have to in the moment.

Blackjack: The Game Where Decisions Matter Most

Blackjack is the best game in most casinos for a player willing to learn. With basic strategy and favourable table rules, the house edge drops below 0.5%. Without it, poor decisions push that edge to 2-4%.

Basic Strategy

Basic strategy is a complete decision table: for every combination of your hand total and the dealer’s upcard, it gives the mathematically optimal choice between hit, stand, double down, and split. It is derived from probability calculations across millions of hands.

The decisions that trip up most players:

  • Hard 16 vs dealer 7-ace: Hit. Standing feels safer but the dealer completes more often than you bust.
  • Soft 18 vs dealer 9-10-ace: Hit. An ace-7 is not as strong as it looks against those cards.
  • Splitting 10s: Never split them. A 20 is a strong hand; two separate hands starting from 10 are not better.
  • Doubling 11: Double against any dealer upcard except an ace (rules-dependent). The probability of drawing a 10-value card justifies it.

Print or bookmark a basic strategy chart and refer to it when playing online. Casinos allow it. There is no reason to guess when the correct answer is available.

Table Rules That Affect House Edge

Not all blackjack games are equal. Rules that reduce house edge: fewer decks, dealer stands on soft 17, 3:2 blackjack payout, late surrender, double on any two cards. Rules that increase it: 6:5 blackjack payout (adds 1.39% to house edge alone), dealer hits soft 17, no resplit.

Always confirm the blackjack payout before sitting down. A 6:5 payout on blackjack makes the game significantly worse regardless of strategy.

Card Counting in Online Blackjack

Counting cards in RNG blackjack is not viable. The deck is reshuffled after every hand. In live dealer blackjack, counting is theoretically possible but casinos use 6-8 deck shoes, continuous shuffle machines, or cut cards deep enough to neutralise any edge. Do not spend time on this at online tables.

Roulette: Managing Bets in a Pure Chance Game

No betting system changes the house edge in roulette. The ball does not know what you bet last round. That said, two things genuinely matter: which wheel you play, and which bets you place.

Always Play European Roulette

European roulette has 37 pockets (0-36), giving a house edge of 2.7%. American roulette has 38 pockets (0, 00, 1-36), pushing the edge to 5.26%. There is no reason to play American roulette when European is available. If you find French roulette with the La Partage rule (half your even-money stake returned when the ball lands on zero), the house edge on even-money bets drops to 1.35%.

Betting Systems: What They Do and Do Not Do

Martingale: Double your bet after every loss, revert after a win. Works frequently for small profits but requires an unlimited bankroll and no table maximum. One long losing streak wipes out all accumulated winnings and can exhaust your budget entirely. It does not change the underlying 2.7% edge.

D’Alembert: Increase by one unit after a loss, decrease by one unit after a win. Less aggressive than Martingale, slower to escalate, but still subject to the same house edge. Better for extending sessions than Martingale.

Fibonacci: Follow the Fibonacci sequence for bet sizing after losses. Conservative compared to Martingale, but recovery after a losing run requires a longer winning sequence.

Betting systems are bankroll management tools, not winning strategies. They change the pattern of when you win and lose, not the overall expected outcome. Use them if they suit your playing style, but understand what they are.

Baccarat: One Correct Bet

Baccarat has three betting options. The optimal strategy fits in a single line: always bet on the Banker.

  • Banker bet: House edge 1.06% (after the standard 5% commission on wins)
  • Player bet: House edge 1.24%
  • Tie bet: House edge approximately 14.4%

The Banker wins slightly more often due to the drawing rules that govern when each side takes a third card. The commission accounts for this advantage. Despite the commission, Banker is the better bet on every hand. Ignore pattern-tracking scorecards. Each hand is independent.

Video Poker: Skill Makes a Measurable Difference

Video poker is one of the few casino games where optimal play can bring RTP above 99%, and in specific cases above 100% on full-pay machines. The gap between optimal play and average play is large.

Reading the Pay Table

Before playing any video poker variant, read the pay table. The key figures are the payouts for a Full House and a Flush. In Jacks or Better, a 9/6 machine (9 coins for Full House, 6 for Flush) returns 99.54% with perfect play. An 8/5 machine drops to 97.3%. That difference compounds significantly over a session.

Always find the pay table before you sit down. Do not play a machine without checking it.

Optimal Hold Strategy

Every video poker hand has a mathematically correct set of cards to hold. Strategy differs by variant (Jacks or Better, Deuces Wild, Bonus Poker each have their own charts). Key principles:

  • Four cards to a Royal Flush outrank most made hands in expected value
  • Always play maximum coins to qualify for the boosted Royal Flush payout
  • A low pair generally outranks four high unsuited cards
  • Never break a made straight or flush to chase a Royal Flush with fewer than four cards to it

Use a strategy chart for the specific variant you are playing. Free trainers exist that flag suboptimal holds in real time.

Slots: What You Can and Cannot Control

Slot outcomes are determined by a certified RNG. There is no pattern, no hot machine, no timing strategy. What you can control:

  • RTP selection: Choose slots with higher published RTP. 96%+ is a reasonable threshold. The difference between a 93% and 97% slot is significant over a session.
  • Volatility matching: Low volatility slots pay small wins frequently. High volatility slots pay large wins rarely. Match the volatility to your bankroll and session goal. A small bankroll on a high-volatility slot may not survive long enough to hit meaningful pays.
  • Bonus terms: If you are playing a slot on a bonus, check the wagering contribution and any maximum bet restrictions. Playing a restricted slot on a bonus forfeits the winnings.
  • Bet sizing: Betting a higher percentage of your bankroll per spin increases variance. Smaller bets relative to your bankroll give the RTP more time to express itself across a longer session.

See our slot providers guide and how casino RNG works for the mechanics behind these games.

Mistakes That Cost Players Money

  • Playing American roulette when European is available. An extra 2.56% house edge for no reason.
  • Ignoring basic strategy in blackjack. Every deviation from correct play adds to the house edge.
  • Taking the Tie bet in baccarat. 14% house edge. Never.
  • Playing video poker without checking the pay table. Short-pay machines look identical to full-pay ones.
  • Chasing losses with larger bets. Raises exposure at the worst time. Always makes sessions end worse.
  • Claiming bonuses without reading wagering requirements. A bonus with 60x wagering on a 96% RTP slot has a negative expected value before you start. Know the maths before you claim.
  • Assuming variance is due to resolve. A slot that has not paid in 100 spins is not more likely to pay on spin 101. Each spin is independent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which casino game has the lowest house edge?

Blackjack with basic strategy and favourable rules runs at 0.4-0.5% house edge. Baccarat (banker bet) sits at 1.06%. European roulette is 2.7%. Video poker on a full-pay 9/6 Jacks or Better machine runs at 0.46% with optimal play.

Do betting systems like Martingale work?

They change the distribution of wins and losses across a session, not the expected outcome. Martingale wins frequently in small amounts but produces catastrophic losses when a long losing run hits a table maximum. No betting system overcomes the house edge.

Can you beat a casino long term with strategy?

Not reliably in standard games. Strategy reduces the edge to its minimum and extends how long your bankroll lasts, but the house edge ensures a negative expected return over sufficient volume. The exception is specific full-pay video poker machines where optimal play brings RTP above 99.5%, combined with cashback or loyalty points that can tip expected value positive.

What is the difference between RTP and house edge?

They are the same number expressed differently. A game with a 4% house edge has 96% RTP. House edge is what the casino keeps; RTP is what the game returns to players over time.

Is card counting possible in online blackjack?

Not in RNG blackjack, where the deck reshuffles after every hand. In live dealer blackjack, the shoe depth and continuous shuffle machines used by most operators make counting ineffective in practice.
